The Winery:
Carvalho Family wines has their tasting room in Sugar Mill in Clarksburg; Galeria do Vinho, which along with four other family wineries. The building was a sugar mill built in 1935 and functioned as such until 1993 when economic conditions in the sugar industry forced its closure. In 2000 the property was purchased by Clarksburg Investment Partners, headed by John Carvalho, and improvements and upgrades began. The facility has plans to add several more businesses in a second phase.
|
The Vineyards:
The Carvalho Family has been in Clarksburg farming for several generations. They began purchasing their grapes from Clarksburg vineyards and producing wines in 2006 from the 2003 vintage.
|
The Wines:
Carvalho makes an intriguing Pinot Noir from Clarksburg grapes, a chocolate and cherry Tempranillo, and a fairly big, smoky Petite Sirah. They make a very nice Late Harvest Chenin Blanc with great aromatics and ripe fruit, but the tawny port style wine is a true star. It has great fig, baked pie and caramel flavors with enough acid to keep it from being too sweet.

The Winemaker:
The Carvalho family has taken up the winemaking family tradition from Portugal.
