The Winery:
The Phillips family started farming the original 160 acres in the 1860s. They were vegetable farmers who soon began planting wine grapes. Their wine grapes grew in reputation across the country as Prohibition set in and many home winemakers in the east purchased Lodi grapes to make their own wine. The estate is now operated by 5th generation brothers, Michael and David Phillips. The winery operates a roadside café, tasting room and farmer’s market off Highway 12 just east of Highway 5. |
The Vineyards:
The estate has grown to 350 acres of wine grapes that are irrigated by waters from the Mokelumne River, adding minerals as well as water to the soil. The vineyard manager is David Phillips, a graduate of University of California, Davis, who utilizes sustainable farming methods to develop the grapes to their fullest potential. |
The Wines:
This is a winery that makes a great list of fun, and very delicious wines that offers something for every palate. They have been incredibly successful with their smooth and fruit forward 7 Deadly Zins, which is made from 7 different Zinfandel vineyards, 7 Heavenly Chards, which is aged in barrels from 7 different French coopers and Earthquake Zin, made from vines planted in 1908. The latter is as big and luscious a Zin as you will find in Lodi. |
The Winemaker:
The Director of Winemaking is Michael J Phillips, a graduate of University of California at Davis. Michael practiced winemaking in his garage and then, in 1984, the family made the leap to a bonded winery with Michael as the winemaker.
