The Winery:
Five generations of grape growers have farmed this land since the first grapes were planted in the early 1880s. The tasting room is in the old farmhouse, which has been gracefully redone and offers not just their great wines for sale, but wine accessories, gifts, books for sale. The tasting room also offers a deli to purchase lunch to enjoy in the pleasantly shaded picnic area.
|
The Vineyards:
The winery has 300 acres of vineyards, one of the first in Lodi. The estate still maintains 75 acres of 100 year plus own rooted Zin Vines planted in 1895 by the current owner’s great grandfather, Giacomo Peirano. This is probably the largest vineyard of Old Vine Zins left in California, all head trained and almost dry farmed. The estate also grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Merlot, Barbera, Muscat Canelli, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Malbec and Tempranillo.
|
The Wines:
If Peirano is known for anything its their great Old Vine Zins, which are deeply flavored with a velvety palate and an incredibly long finish. In addition they make an age-worthy Petite Sirah and a Cabernet produced from 29-year-old vines. Their approach to Chardonnay is intriguing, picking half the crop when the grapes are not quite ripe, but with a good acid level and picking the other half after the grapes have ripened to a wonderful fruitiness and then blending the two into a complex, fruity wine with great acidity.

The Winemaker:
The winemaker at Peirano is winery owner, Lance Randolph. Lance is a fourth generation Lodi farmer with a passion for producing the best grapes by using a combination of new and old world practices.
