The Clarksburg American Viticultural Area

Clarksburg Sugar MillClarksburg is the AVA closest to the major metropolitan area of Sacramento, just to the southwest and running along the Sacramento River off Highway 160. Its proximity to the Sacramento River Delta and the San Francisco Bay creates cool mornings and breezy afternoons that can often mean a temperature 10 degrees cooler than the city of Sacramento. The region covers 64,000 acres and has 10,000 planted to wine vineyards known for superior Chenin Blanc and Petite Sirah. Better grape growing practices and varietal experimentation has resulted in award winning Tempranillo, Syrah, Barbera, Viognier and Pinot Grigio wines being produced in the region.

There are currently ten wineries that have tasting facilities in the area, either with regular hours or by appointment. There are another five with no tasting facilities in the area.

The sub-AVA of Merritt Island is located completely within the Clarksburg AVA and is know for its distinctive loam soils. Only Bogle Winery has a winery located in the Merritt Island AVA.
