The Winery:
The Indelicato family has been producing wines & growing grapes throughout California for 80 years. The founder and family patriarch, Gaspare, came to the United States from Sicily in 1912 and by the time Prohibition came about he was producing homemade wine and selling wine grapes to people in Chicago and on the East Coast. In the mid 1930s winemaking on a large scale began in earnest and the wines became local favorites with the Italian population. Delicato is now one of the largest family owned and operated wineries in California.
|
The Vineyards:
Although the winery is located outside of the Lodi AVA, Delicato controls 10,000 acres of vineyards in Lodi and Monterey County, crushing an amazing 150,000 tons of grapes annually. The Monterey County vineyard consists of 8100 acres, making it the largest single grape growing property in the world. The Indelicato family purchased the vineyard, called San Bernabe Vineyard, in 1988 and began a replanting program to improve the grapes and increase the diversity of varietals grown.
|
The Wines:
The Delicato wine portfolio is a diverse one that ranges from a very easy drinking value wine sold in a box to their ultra premium Delicato Monterey Vine Select label. These wines are often ranked as solid best buys by major wine critics throughout the industry.
|
The Winemaker:
The Director of winemaking at Delicato is Tim Wong. Tim was born in China but immigrated to the United States when he was young and graduated from Davis with Bachelor in Chemistry. Prior to joining Delicato in 1996 he worked for several major California wineries. Five other winemakers work with Tim in the production of the estate wines.
