The Winery:
The Heringers are an old Delta family, having farmed the regin for over 140 years. Winemaker Michael is a 6th generation Delta farmer. The estate began growing grapes in 1970s and continues to sell wine grapes to wineries throughout the state. Located on 220 acres of sandy loam not far from the Sugar Mill, the farm still has a large number of acres devoted to grain crops in addition to wine grapes.
The Vineyards:
The Heringer farm has 120 acres of wine grapes including Peitie Sirah, Zinfandel, Barbera, Teroldego, Petite Verdot, Cab Franc, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Muscat Canelli. In addition the Heringers manage neighboring vineyard of 350 acres planted to Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The vineyards are irrigated, but use monitors to only water when necessary to promote small berries and condensed flavors.
The Wines:
The winery produces a nicely crisp Chenin Blanc aged completely in stainless with just a slight minerality, nice roundness and great floral bouquet. The Petite Sirah is fruit forward with a good tannin structure and tasting notes of blackberry & black cherry black pepper and great a wonderful spiciness. The tawny port style wine has big fig, raisin, caramel and vanilla with enough acid to keep it from being too sweet.
The Winemaker:
Michael Heringer, son of winery owner Steve, returned to family business in 2004 with degree in Enology from Fresno. This helped the estate decide to make the leap into the production of a few small batch, handcrafted from their premier wine grapes.
