The Winery:
Established in 1978, a new winery was built in 2000 specifically to produce great Zinfandel wines. It is an elegant tribute to the Zinfandel grape. The winery has a modern A frame style that allows views out to the old Zinfandel vineyards not far from the facility. The high ceilings and wood paneled walls of the tasting room work beautifully with the views to the meticulously landscaped grounds outside.
The Vineyards:
David Lucas purchased his first Zinfandel vineyard in 1977. He has a 7 acre vineyard that is over eighty years old that is own rooted, along with another that is over 50 years old growing on St. George rootstock. He keeps the yields low to encourage deeply flavored, dark colored wines and picks the grapes in the morning when its cool to impact the grapes as little as possible.
The Wines:
Lucas was the first winery to market their wines under the Lodi AVA back in the 1970s before Lodi had received its rightful reputation as a fine wine region. The winery produces 100% varietals from select vineyards and highlights the specific qualities of terroir that make the vineyard special. The estate philosophy of winemaking is to discover the vineyard’s true character and express it in the wine.
The Winemaker:
David Lucas, the winemaker at Lucas, worked for Mondavi-Woodbridge as vice president of grower relations and while in the Peace Corps was involved in grower relations in Indian, Persia and Nepal.
