The Winery:
Macchia means the spot in Italian, which in this case means the spot to find high-quality wines. The winery makes a large number of very different Zinfandels that bring out the terroir of their individual vineyard beautifully. The tasting room is located at the strikingly landscaped estate in the Acampo region.
|
The Vineyards:
The estate owns none of its own grapes, but instead buys from some of the best vineyards in Lodi and Amador County. They purchase from no less than five Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards, including the Original Grand Pere in Amador, thought to have the oldest Zin vines left producing in California. They also purchase Barbera and Petite Sirah from the Linsteadt Vineyard in Amador County.
|
The Wines:
The award winning wines of Macchia are best described as voluptuous with deep, intense flavors and lots of ripe fruit. Their 2005 Cooper Ranch Barbera “Infamous” was one of 3 winners of the 2nd international Barbera contest that takes place in Piedmont Italy. The winery specializes in very distinct Zinfandels and Italian Varietals.
|
The Winemaker:
The winemaker at Macchia is founder Tim Holdener. Tim discovered a passion for making great wine and worked with several commercial wineries and mentored with winemaking consultant Gordon Binz to develop the skills he uses to create the estate wines.
