The Winery:
Mokelumne Oaks was founded in 2001 when a grape glut caused a group of local vintners to band together to create their own winery. The tasting room is located in Vino Piazza, a cluster of wineries and restaurants styled with a Tuscan villa flare.
|
The Vineyards:
The winery is actually a co-op of local vintners and all the grapes come from the Lodi area. The grapes that best display the unique characteristics of the region are selected to be used in the Mokelumne Oaks wines.
|
The Wines:
The wines of Mokelumne Oaks are made in the Portuguese tradition, which includes a White Wine Port made from Tokay grapes. Winemaker Manual Tavares believes allowing the grapes hang on the vines for an extended time to increase the color and depth of flavor in the resulting wine.
|
The Winemaker:
The winemaker at Mokelumne Oaks, Manual Tavares, was born in San Miguel in the Azure Islands, Portugal. Manuel learned to make wine with his father at the age of 10, in the Portuguese style of his homeland.
