Delta Wines celebrates the wines and wineries located in and near the Sacramento River Delta and under the influence of the cooling breezes provided by this diverse waterway. There are two major American Viticultural areas included in the region; Clarksburg and Lodi. Two of the oldest agriculture and wine grape growing regions of California, they are both receiving increasing acknowledgement of their ability to produce award winning premium red and white wines. Although rightly known as an area capable of producing incredible Zinfandel wines, that reputation falls short of the whole story as the area receives increasing recognition forthe production of Barbera, Petite Sirah, Pinot Grigio, and much, much more. |

The Clarksburg AVA, which is located just west of the city of Sacramento, is sixteen miles long, eight miles wide and runs from the north next to the town of Freeport, west to the Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel, east to Interstate 5 and south to Twin Cities Road. The region encompasses 64,000 acres with roughly 10,000 acres planted to vineyards. Although not large in size, it finds itself located within three converging counties; Sacramento on the southeast, Yolo on the north and west and Solano on the southwest. Due to the sea breeze the temperatures here can be as much as 10 degrees cooler than in nearby Sacramento, allowing the grapes great hang time and acidity with a more pronounced complexity of flavor.

The Lodi AVA, which was established in March of 1986, covers 458,000 acres known for its Mediterranean climate influenced by the cooling Delta Breezes and sandy soils. The greater AVA is made up of seven smaller regions established in August of 2006. Each of the seven AVAs have a distinctiveness to their terroir that gives that same distinctiveness to the wines made from grapes grown there. The AVAs are: Alta Mesa in north central Lodi AVA; Borden Ranch in east central Lodi, Clements Hills in south east Lodi, Cosumnes River at the far north west corner of Lodi, Jahant in west central Lodi south of Dry Creek, Mokelumne River in the center of Lodi and the Woodbridge region and includes most of the Old Vine Zin vineyards and lastly, Sloughouse in the far north east with the Cosumnes River at its center and is the hottest of the seven regions. |
